Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the model related posts so far talk about getting the models, and animations into Soft Image format(*.xsi) like it ain't no thang....

But..  I don't have Soft Image, nor the money to buy it, so how do we convert files to that format?

You have to have 3ds max R4, and then you use the plugin provided in the SDK or if you have R3, then download it at http://www.maxplugins.de.

I've read that there is a XSI plugin for maya too, but I haven't found it, so I don't know.

Otherwise, I don't think you can convert to that format.

gmax is the smaller brother of max. Just copy the plugin from the sdk and put it in the gmax/plugins folder. It should work.

Lemme know if it does and I'll add it to the carcass minifaq stuff

hm, i just copied the vmdexp.dle and the XSIImporter.dli in the gmax/plugins...but gmax failed to load the dll´s. does it simply not work or did i something wrong?

Oh man, that sounds bad..  Okay, so if one of my modelers made a brush in Milkshape, or animated it in Anim8r(freeware proggies) and then converted them to *.3ds files, we would still need 3DSMAX to be able to convert that file into *.xsi?  That's diabolical...  :(

You just need to use something to export to .xsi. Doesnt matter what.
