u will need to scrape off what is left of the thremal stuf from the cpu die, a rasor blade is good for this, but be carefull not to scratch it

wont the razor blade short out the cpu

i think a thermal pad was used on my pc.  as it looks like there is wax around the edges of the heatsink.

wud the heatsink and fan that u mentioned work on any mb that has a P4.  cos i think i have a different retenition mechanism to the one that that is used by the hsf u mentioned

it says its not compatible with 423 but only with 478.

and i have a 478

is it compatible with any socket 478 P4, cos i thought that all motherboards had different retenition mechanisms.  and wudn't the retenition mechanism matter

i have just found out that no P4 shud exceed 60 degrees celsuis or major damage will occur.

considering that i have had the pc for nearly a year i think the temperature is being reported incorectly.  wot do u think spike

the retension mecanisim usualy only varies between sockets  ???

i tend to agree that its being reported higher, i know one of the bios revisions for my asus mobo cause the temp to be reported 10degrees higer,

if u go in to ur bios does it give u the same temp in there??

u might find more information about it in the newsgroups for ur motherboard manufacter.

but its still worth keeping an eye on untill u know how much of a diference in temp ther actualy is

If you are overclocking...that is your choice...you need better fan and heatsink...copper is good. It is used in 1U rackmount servers that have no headroom to accomodate a traditional heatsinks. You can get tall ones that will work the best for the price...silver is just too expensive. Duh

Spend the money on it or be prepared to spend a lot more replacing the cpu and possibly motherboard.

Make sure that you have some cirulation in the case...fans should suck bottom front and vent top rear.

If the case is near a heater you found another problem...remember...colder the better!

Thermal paste is a must!!! you should use Thermal 3. Get it from any component computer store.

I'm not sure about the reliability of SiSoft Sandra when it comes to temperature reading. I was having no errors but decided to check the temp of my MB using Sandra, it was 126 degrees celcius! I thought that couldn't be right or by PC would be cooking but I bought a front air intake fan to supplement my heatsink w/fan and PSU fan. Checked that fans are working fine, they are. Checked temp. Still 126 deg. Ran with sides off. No change... maybe it's just my motherboard not accurately reporting the temp. but I've had no errors what so ever and my MB doesn't even fell hot when touched  ???
