I was reading in the Call of Duty 2 level editing forums, and there is a locked post about converting .bsp files to .map files and if it's actually possible, but this is not where my topic is going, I assure you.

I would just like to say it is possible. I've decompiled several SoF2 maps, converted to CS:Source hammer files, and was able to scale the map to CS:Source sizes. I don't know how you guys look at that sort of thing, but I can tell you it's been done. It's built into the q3map2.exe - you just need a batch file to set the proper tags.

So that gets me to where I'm at now. I have not mapped for Call of Duty, so I'm pretty oblivious.

Here are my questions:
Will the CoD4 level creator (is it still radiant?) be able to handle .map files?
If not, is there a third party program that will convert .map to whatever file extension the CoD4 level editing tool uses?

I hope this isn't an overloaded topic.

I guess I should of added that I contacted Ravensoft before doing so.

Their response was basically 'they didn't care what I did with their maps as long as I wasn't trying to make money on it' - which I wasn't. Mainly it was for learning.

I prefer that no one gets in to the decompiling argument. Let's all just ignore that urge. Why? because doing so could result in modifying the map of someone who doesn't want that to happen and who has compiled the map to bsp assuming it was secure and has not released the map file for that purpose.

That out of the way...
There is no public release of cod4 tools just yet. Based on what we have seen and heard, the map editor will be a variation of radiant and will behave similarly.

Thank you foyleman. Looking at the post, I probably could of left all that out - but I just read that thread in the CoD2 forums so it was right on my mind. I won't bring it up again.

I would never decompile a user created map, unless permitted. I've always figured if they wanted somebody to tinker with their art then they would of released the raw files themselves, as I would.

With that out of the way...

you cant decompile cod bsps (cod2 uses d3dbsp) at all, if u could there would be a decompiler out by now, there are decompilers out for older games like quake 3... but best not to say too much :P

Yeah - I haven't been a fan of the past Call of Duty's,[evil] but this modern one is right up my ally.

I don't plan on doing anything with past Call of Duty maps. I am a Soldier of Fortune 2 fan at heart - so you can see where I'm going with this...

Being a published author and programmer I am totally against any form of reverse engineering.

I also understand and sympathize with those that yearn to find out how things work by taking them apart.

It has become a controversy and some companies have deliberately done it and some have gotten away with it.

I choose to respect the author/creator and ask permission if it is REALLY necessary.
