hi can i make a Terrain in maya or WorldBuilder and i can put one textures for the ground one big textures or i have to do it in cod4 tool
and how big the textures like the resolution can be

In the CoD4 tools.

Make a brush and go to patch->Terrain patch. There is a tutorial in the CoD section on how to turn it into hills and bumps.

i know all the tutorial in here but what i want is can i cover the ground with a big textures
i found it hard to make a terrain in cod4 tool

would you explain that a bit more?

you should get familiar with surface inspector (press S).

cod4 engine limit is 4096x4096 pixels for textures iirc, but only new graphic cards will be able to handle them. you shouldn't use texture above 1024x1024.

ah, and you shouldn't make terrain using a third party tool, unless you can convert it into cod4 patches. using maya would mean having a model as terrain. thats a really bad idea (problems: collision, performance, lod)

There's a program (can't remember the name ,sorry) that can generate Q3 terrains (brush format) from heightmaps. These can be loaded into CoD4 radiant, and be made into a terrain meshes by selecting the top faces (15 by 15 faces at most) of each brush and using the new faces-to-terrain tool. Could be useful, though it will only create the bland type of terrains you'll get from only using the paint height tools

Edit: It's called GenSurf, however I can't find a working link for it now

no thats fine i will make the ground in cod4 tool.

so if i have cople of terrains paches and they are splited do i need to wield the vertx or i dont?

and in the cod 4 tool theres a sample map and i want to learn from it but every time i try to select a brush it select all the map is there a way to ungroup it ??

weld small patches together only (low count of vertices). anyhow, you can't merge highly subdevided patches (eg. two 15x15 patches). radiant will say, that you have too much vertices to merge. just leave them seperated. when using vertex tool, turn "allow soft selection" on. this way you won't get gaps between seperate patches.


select brush (group), right click, Prefab -> Enter Prefab

to get back, right click, Prefab -> Leave Prefab

use "Save as..." to save the changed map as a new file (don't overwrite the original unless you want to overwrite it!)
