Here's an utter noob Question! [crazy]

I'v a map layout designed as a 2-D Graphic and I'm ready to start mapping my idea. However, I can't see anywhere in the TUTS that says I should start with a Sky-box and work inwards or just build my buildings/terrain and work my way outwards. I'm guessing it's the latter.

Cheers! [drink]

When you build a house do you start with the roof?

erm im no pro ampepr or anything.. done a few maps for et in my time but only started mapping for cod4 last night. Now, my suggestion would be before you start mapping your idea do a practise map. a building maybe a bit of terrain some texts that sort of thing.

As for your current question, although your map is planned out my guess is you havent drawn measurments etc.etc. So the sizing of your skybox could change as your map grows. i think the way you could work this would be start of in a big skybox and start mapping move the skybox if need be but obviously it would eb nice ot have the sky box the right size instantly but you cant. You will most likely get some inspiration when mapping. "wow wouldnt it be a good idea if i could travel between these buildings or there was a back route round here..." Then you may need to extend it.

So, IMO adding the skybox and some ambient lighting in will make it look a lot better but dont overdo your work here untill the end would be my suggestion...

Hopefully, someone will tell me if my views on this are right or wrong... i would also like to know the best methods with mapping.

My way of working is to make a decent size skybox and some flat terrain. Add in sky textures and rough worldspawn values aswell as a global intermission, a tdm spawn and a reflection probe.

I personally make prefabs first, and this quick skybox lets you compile and test both for the look of things, and to see if theres any errors.

Once your main prefabs are built you can start with a clean map, add in the prefabs and you'll have a pretty good idea of what size everything else needs to be. :)

Cool! Cheers for the speedy replies. [drink]

Tbh, unfortunately, I don't have endless hours to spend each week experimenting with each tut etc, so what I'm trying to do is economize on my learning curve into one project. Which is why I want to start off on the right foot [thumbs_up]

The idea of starting within a really big and basic skybox sounds like the right plan for me, and as you say, I can easily adapt it if things/ideas spring to mind.

That's exactly the advice I'm looking for. If any admins are reading, would be good idea to mention the actual "Hands-on" approach to how a map is made and not just the individual elements involved. But now I have a starting point! Cheers people! [thumbs_up]
