First post. I've been coming here for awhile now and i have learnt so much. Finally been able to use effects at will now.

But I am having one small problem. I'm redoing a Ravenshield map that has alot of stairs. They are all in place and built so heres the problem. Once inside my map and running around, going up the stairs seems fine, but soon as a run down them i leap down 5 steps at a time.heres the question. Is there a brush/entity am i suppose to use?

I've opened up backlot and had a look around and i see alot o portal brushes. How do i use them? thanks and great forum.

what size have you got the stairs at? If you have them too close together, you wont be able to walk down them properly. I think the default is 10 wide, 8 high... something like that...

Other than that - not sure - hope this helps

portal brushes have nothing to do with the stairs. (get back to this in a second)

I would look in backlot to see if there are any stairs and if there are then to make your stairs the same dimensions. As SIC pointed out there are default values they use that work great.

Now back to portals:

The portal brushes you see complete a cell. The cell is used to determine if something will be drawn or not for the player. If a player is inside the cell then it will draw the objects inside the cell, if they are outside the cell then it will not draw the objects inside.

Anything structural already makes up part of a cell, but you probably noticed portal brushes covering doors and windows, those complete the cell where there was no structural brush.

Portals are used to increased Frames per second, but toooooo many portals can have the reverse effect because the system will spend to much time determining what to draw and what not to draw.

well thanks for the help. I reopened backlot and had another look. i took a pic of them to check the angle and thinkness of each individual step.

Here

For some reason running up and down them the player seems to "stick" to them and with custom stairs this doesn't happen. There are much steeper stairs within the game. Like in the Map CRASH the building by the crashed chopper that has stairs all the way to the roof is an example. The steps seem smaller and closer together. I will try a few more builds to see if its just me :P
