I got my Modsonline T-shirt today, that made me come back to the website, but as ideas go to boost viewing figures its a pretty costly one :P

Nah this site I've always considered the best place for modding, but some some reason its never THE place for all modders to gather, there's a decent community but you always kind of imagine it could be the place for all modders and mappers, but darned if I know how to make that happen, some of the tweeks as suggested would help, and I like the wiki idea for tutorials, obviously a closed one only edited by mods and experienced members. I just quite like wiki layouts lol, can make them nice and accessable with full page layouts

But I always thought people should be coming here for mapping and modding help, especially the CoD series, they just seem to be spread out

I've got one thing I'd like to see added.

Searching multiple forum categories.

For instance.. I've got a CoD4 problem.. kinda scripting and kinda level design related.
It would be great if I could just use the whole CoD4 category, instead of having to search scripting and level design seperately (and general gaming and SP just in case).
Currently wen you select Call of Duty 4, it jumps to the next one down, which is CoD4 level design.

I 2nd that The_Caretaker... especially since if I have a scripting question, there's good odds it's buried in CoD or CoDUO somewhere. [rolleyes]

Along the same lines, I think some of the tuts need to be reorganized for the same reason. Right now, they are basically organized by what version of the game the autor happened to be running at the time. It's like going to a C++ site and having things related to straight C++ divided up by VC++, Borland Turbo C, C#, etc. Sure there's compiler specific things, but the majority of it is just CoD...err ... C++ [drink]

A wiki-type of sub for the tutorials where it is possble to post whether the specific page applies to only one game or to other games as well.

Maybe a sort of licencing in the way code project does for the posted assets by members. see CPOL

@Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

[devilishgrin]

From personal experience with other communities, I think alot of them gather because of 1 of two things:
  • They have a forum category for anything to be posted. This site is pretty much a question and answer based forum. Both are very good however and what is setup here suits us pretty well.
  • They use a chatroom (the one i'm thinking of uses an irc channel) to idle in and just chat. I kind of like IRC over web based chatrooms because they are easily tucked away in your toolbar if you don't want to see it.

I do agree though. It would be nice for some more general topics but I think that could get focus off of the main theme of the site, mapping and modding. I might be wrong though.

Watch me as I get flamed by the "Share?, that's MINE!" crowd....[lol]

More generic contests, especially if it's opensource stuff, like one month could be textures for a community texture pack. That way your not limiting it to current members of 1 game, and that gives to the users of the site, not just players of the finished content.

[thumbs_up]
There's something horribly, treasonously wrong in a country of the people, by the people and for the people, where the government functions by lying to the people.

OK. I've done the preliminary research to make the wiki tutorials a reality. I plan on going through the code today to see how it will be implemented. If it looks simple enough, I will perform the changes today. Otherwise, I will just take notes to perform the changes as soon as I have the extra time. Either way, you asked... you are getting.

What's in the works:
- make the tutorials section editable by the members of this site
- allow for direct entry of new tutorials by the members of this site
- save versions of the pages to prevent incorrect changes (reversion)
- allow viewing of these different versions along with comparison of changes made
- log who made what changes
- limit permissions to edit the pages to prevent abuse (exact details to be determined)
- create a means of image upload for the tutorials that doesn't permit exploits (toughest part to figure out at this point)

Excellent. Really nice to see some new changes to the site foyle.

Just make sure there is a big red button that says "Someone neads a beating" so when pressed, it flags the tutorial for review incase of abuse.

Sweet. I can't see them being abused much, the members of this site are generally well behaved. But yeah, you never know.
