Personally, I think hiring more people would make it worse, the phrase "too many cooks" comes to mind

I agree with LPRay and Bati, wiki style is not a good idea. First its a pain for those who are not use to this ( the majority of people ) because:

Its not easy to understand the structure;
Its not easy to use the coding used in those wikis;
You have no control on what will be added or corrected by others, this is creating more implication from the admins;
This won't keep people from posting erroneous tutorials.

Welshy, I disagree. There is very few admins/moderators here on Modsonline.

You have 1 general mod. for the news ( Bati ). You have 1 mod. still mapping ( Rasta ) and Caretaker for general questions. All the others are simply not active ( or very few implications ) in the modding/scripting/mapping community.

Maybe its time to make a spring cleanup? or a big reorganization on everyone's duty.

How does that make any difference as to what content tutorial wise is posted?

you can never have too many cooks, as long as it is relative to the size of your restaurant..
this restaurant... is huge.
all it takes is a bit of management, you can for instance, assign a mod to look jϊst at the tutorials, that way he does not have any right in any of the other sections, and will not get in the way of any of the other mods.

Welshy don't turn this thread in a flaming one, a war or something else.

I'm trying to help here.
If you read carefully what has been wrote you'll understand everything.

SporadiC understood.

This is a modding/scripting/mapping web site with stuffs released but none of what is released to help has been tested. I'm talking about maps/scripts and tutorials.

Maybe a little word from Foyleman may be good.

As a moderator I've got something to add here.

As moderators, we're here to moderate, not answer questions (though ofcourse we do).. that's actuall your (the members) collective jobs. We're just here to make sure everything goes alright, while the community as a whole is here to help people out.

And though I agree with the mods section might need a look at, I personally don't think there has to be a new mod hired for this.

As for tutorials being in multiple categories.. that will only make it easier to find, because there are more ways to find the same tutorial. (See my earlier post).

Wiki is nice, but that DOEs require a mod.. and basically.. .these forums are kinda your wiki database.. alongside searching the tutorials you should always search the forums.. as most questions have been asked and answered before (not all ofcourse, but that's where the community has to step in and collectively come up with a good answer)

I don't want to sound bias because of the fact that i am a mod but you don't actually need any more mods in my opinion, we do a lot behind the seens such as locking, deleting and correcting posts and threads. Im speaking for myself, but im sure caretaker etc are in the same situation regarding the number of pm's we also recieve (probably from 10 - 20 per day)

In my opinion i don't like the wiki idea, never have liked that sort of thing. The tutorials we do have are good (don't get me wrong authors) it's just they need to be regulated and we need to tidy up a bit..

Thus the reason for this post. If it will cause arguements then we can forget the idea, was not my intention to cause any problems, but rather to help the community and solve some reoccuring problems regarding lack of details in some tuts, at the end of the day im only making more work for myself so if you think its a bad idea and we should just leave it be then say the word and we can forget all about this thread.

I agree that moderators, here or elsewhere, that the main job for them is to keep an eye on things and contribute when or if required.

What is needed here, and Rasta this is directed at your view too, is a moderator who has the job of organizing a committee or group of mappers, scripters and or modders to look at existing and future tutorial submissions to test for validity.

I like and respect both you, Caretaker and Rasta, and I agree as well that it is the community that helps people and subsequently developes the majority of the tutorials. However, without some sort of watchdog moderator/committee, chaos can develop quickly with inaccurate, inadequate to out and out wrong tutorials being hosted by any site. It is these tutorials that people are trying to learn from and it is quite often these same tutorials that are creating the 100's of posts from people who have tried and failed with poor tutorials.

So in this case I have to disagree with some of your assessments in this.

Rasta, it is a good thread, well done for broaching the subject so let it play out and see how it concludes.

Ray

I guess we can be glad that we have a community who will help people if they've gone wrong in a tut.

Here's an idea that's rattling around in my head that I can put together.

- allow the tutorials to be listed in multiple categories (multiple games)
- create a comments system to allow for comments to be made for each tutorial. Questions will be deleted as that's for the forums.
- come up with a system that allows changes to be submitted similar to a wiki style, however no change is accepted without being seen first.

Now that last bullet is tough because it won't always be possible to test changes made to a tutorial, so how do we really know they are correct?
We can save a previous version of the tutorial, but is that enough to allow us to go back to a working version of the tutorial if a bunch of edits were all wrong?
Do we allow all members to make changes or since general membership is free, should we restrict that privilege to subscribing members to prevent abuse?
