Recently I had to replace my old cable modem. I opted for my cable company to install a wireless modem/router combo. I now have a netgear cg814gcmr. Only very recently I've been trying to do some MP gaming online. Cod4, HL2, BF2, all have problems with connections, if I can connect at all. Pings on cod4 are enormous, if I can get the server list to populate at all.

I've tried numerous port foward/trigger/tcp setting tweaks suggestions without any luck. My next step will be to ask my cable company to set me up with a regular wired modem so I can hook up my old d-link router.

I'd like to try and get my current set up to work so I don't have to go to the trouble. So, does anyone have any tips/suggestions? Has anyone else been through this problem?

Thanks.

Are you using the wireless capabilities of that router or have you hardwired your nic directly to the router?

I try to connect to online games from the hard wired pc, the one with the modem/router hooked up directly to the pc.

I haven't tried using the other pc to get into an online game. That is the one that uses the usb adapter to pick up the wireless signal.

Have you set up a password for your wireless on your router? If not, it could be possible that someone else nearbyu is using your connection and could be downloading.

Check out http://www.speedtest.net . Check the speed indicated by Speedtest against the speed that you are supposed to be getting. Does your ISP have rules about downloading things during peak times?

It's cabled in.

The internet is cabled in and goes into the modem/router.
There is only one ethernet cable from the modem/router into my pc's network adapter card. This is the pc I use.

The other pc has the usb adapter to pick up the signal. It's about 15' away. But I don't use this one to try and game online.

I have been able to run a LAN game between the two computers with HL2. Don't know if that is helpful at all though.

Yes it has a password.

I'm not sure my isp has any rules about peak times. I would guess that they don't. I don't recall ever having limited d/l speeds at any given time of day because of some sort of peak time.

You might want to contact the isp and have them test the modem for ping and whatever other tests they can conduct. Talk with tech support from your isp and explain the issues that you are having.

It could be a bad unit.

Just to follow up...

It was my modem/router. There are some advanced settings that I didn't know I had access to until I finally got some help from my ISP tech support. Of course the unit itself might not be all that great, (I've seen a lot of negative remarks about Netgear), but it was basically a firewall settings problem.

Some servers are still very laggy and have really high pings, like in the thousands, but for the most part, I've been able to connect to multiplayer again.
