[confused]

I have tried many variations on indoor portals to no avail...

What am I doing wrong?

First attempt, following portalling tut under CoD tuts:

1. Create brush covering all doors and windows, sticking out a hair on inside and outside

2. Texture with portal no draw

3. Select inside faces and texture with portal

Second attempt:

1. Surround entire building with portal no draw brushes on sides and top.

2. Extend sides down to caulk floor below map

3. Texture inside faces with portal

Either way, when I compile bsp, it tells me that both sides are the same cell, portal ignored...

What simple thing am I overlooking?

(I shudder to even thik of outdor portalling)
[rolleyes]

open up a prefab building from blackout or mp_backlot and study the portals.

After its compiled and given you an error, goto file menu -> pointfile.

Follow the red line, and it will show you where the leak is.

When you're making your portal, get the filter window up ('f' key) and uncheck the following

Terrain
curve
detail
clip
decals
static models

These are the main things to remove so you can actually see what you can portal to.

Thanks peri... will give that a go... I was using errorfile and next leakspot/error, which was pointless since all it did was go through each of my portal brushes and highlight them. [rolleyes]

1. Create brush covering all doors and windows, sticking out a hair on inside and outside

it shoud not stick out... if it stick out, a gap will form because your portal texture won't be in contact with a solid texture. If you know what i mean...

Something I should add to that tutorial is about detailed brushes. Portals can "leak" though detailed brushes, so therefor you have to add a portal around detailed brushes as well.

Here is a text example, not the best...
portal
-----| |-------
| |
| |
-----| |------
detailed brush

you can make the detailed brush structural again to fix the problem...
Few tips for coding.
1. Keep the script as short as possable.
2. Don't use comments unless you HAVE to point something out.
3. Don't over complicate the script, keep it orgainized and easy to read.

These help you find simple errors and makes it easy to make changes.

I had a hell of a time understanding portals, even after reading tut after tut and going over error files over and over.
If you have door ways or windows, use the portal no draw texture and draw a box 2 deep inside your door way or window opening, and place it as close to the outside surface of the opening. It must touch, but not extend into the door or window frame brush. Select the outside portion only of the your portal no draw textured box,(ctrl, shift). And change it to the portal texture. Your portal will have 5 sides as portal no draw and one as portal. You will need to duplicate these steps for the reversed side of the opening. So a portal texture is on the inside of the door way and one on the outside of the door way and a small gap between inside the door way between the two portals you created.

Hopefully these examples help

You can cover the outside of the door way or window but it requires that it extends past the opening top and sides and the bottom still meets the floor. The exposed sides must be a portal texture. 4 sides portal texture (left, right, top and face) and two portal no draw (bottom and inside face).

Sorry mate, but thats 100% wrong. :)
If your house had a door and 3 windows, and you did it that way, you'd create 4 very thin and tiny portals. (One for each window and the door), instead of 1 portal that was the volume of the house.

Aswell as the tuts, try reading thru these

50% wrong maybe :). If you leave out the second portal creation.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I have no errors, and that small area you speak of is not shown when I use r_singlecell in my map. The inside was not shown from outside, the outside not shown from inside including the lower floors, until I entered that area. I have a multi story building with portals between floors also and when I did not do that I was getting the portal has same side blah blah, ignoring portal.

So as long one side has a portal texture, it will stop the area from being drawn whether you are inside or outside of the area?

Problem I see with a lot of the tuts are "well I already did it and this is just a quick example" and the replies to some peoples posts about problems are not that clear and not in terms a noob mapper may understand. Like some that go into the technical reasons why, more then how.
I read so many damn threads and most of those tuts confused me even more. This is my first time mapping and too much of it was figured out by correcting it error after error.

Sorry for adding to the confusion, Do not listen to me. [banghead]

Firstly, forget about portal no draw texture, its only there for your convienance, radiant ignores it completely. (In fact, hitting the 'toggle drawing of draw toggle surfs' - 12th button from right in the toolbar - hides pnd so you can see the portal faces clearly).

So......Portal cells share walls, so whichever side of the 'portal brush' you are on, you should be in a cell, so you are never 'inside or outside', you're always 'inside' a cell. (Ignore pnd and it'll make more sense :) )

Its a real pain to try and describe portal techniques in a post[banghead]
