So to sum up indoor portalling....

A cell is an area fully enclosed on top, bottom, all sides by either a portal texture or a structural brush.

Is that correct?

I still can't get it in my map, but I'm going to create a small room and play around, just to be sure it isn't my flaky azz mod tools acting up... (If there's a post about an odd glitch in mod tools... there's good odds my machine has that glitch... including not being able to update the zone file, but that's another topic LOL) [rolleyes]

I figured out another important tidbit. Even if your prefabs are made out of structural brushes, that's not good enough.

1. If a solid wall of a prefab is one of your cell sides, you need to run a caulk wall along it to get the seal. Radiant won't use the wall of the prefab and will report a leak.

2. You can't portal the doors and windows of a prefab after importing it to your map. The prefab has to be portalled in it's own map file. (For the reason in #1)

ERROR: portal is not at a BSP split, is floating, or is next to a solid brush

hmmm... what do I do about this one?

The location referenced is the center of a portal brush, but the brush looks fine to me.

It's not floating.
I don't know what they mean by being next to a solid brush... doesn't it HAVE to be?
No clue what they mean by BSP split...

Yep, 100% correct :)

Nope - you can portal up to prefabs no problem :)




That wall is part of a prefab.


You can see the hole thats left if i hide the prefab.

hmmm.... it wouldn't let me (The outside wall of the prefab was the side of a cell... put a caulk wall along the prefab, moved the portal texture back a hair to line it up with the caulk instead of the prefab, and it worked...


Any ideas on the BSP split error?

Nevermind that one... I played around with aligning it with different grid marks and got it to go away... [rolleyes]

Now I just need to fix this one:

portal sees into two cells (aka portal t-junction)

doing my first map and my first portals..

indoor went fine, but my outdoor portals are driving me crazy..lol

Portal t-junction.



There are 3 simple portal cells. The long one at the back, 2 smaller in front.

If you ignore the 2 smaller portals, and look just at the larger one on its own - that would compile fine without an error.

But if you add those 2 smaller ones, the first portal would now fail. Look at the brush i highlighted in blue. Its 1 brush thats being used to close 2 cells. (portal sees into 2 cells).
If you look at the shape it makes in the overhead plan view, the divider of the small cells meets that highlighted brush at a T.

Real easy to fix - just split the highlighted brush where the portal texture of the divider meets it (along the arrow marks i put in)

Hehe... I coulda figured it out fairly quickly if it had actually been a t-junction. ;-)

Thanks for all the tips peri. [thumbs_up]

The portal texture it referred to was portalling a doorway though... no other portal textures near it. What it ended up being... which doesn't make much sense, is the floor in front of the doorway is a ramp. I had to hit 'e' and line the bottom angle of the portal brush up with the angle of the floor... portalling seems way more difficult to set up correctly than it would have to be. Oh well... got it sorted... [rocking]

Next... outdoor....

I got one cell to work correctly (was structure on 5 of the 6 sides LOL)... the next one I tried has a portal texture on 2 adjoining sides and structure on the other 4... portal ignored.
