How do I Make a building Structural, I have portald all windows and doors. do I select the whole building and hit a button I am so confused. what are the things you make Detail? interior walls pictures on a wall? Plese help if you can.

Just the things that will block a players view, and you make part of a portal need to be structural, everything else is detail.

Most people start of portals by blocking doors and windows of buildings. So, the walls, floor and ceiling need to be structure, everything else (stairs, pictures, interior dividing walls etc) are detail.

By default, rad makes all brushes structure (black in the 2d window). Easiest way is to select the entire house, make everything detail (right click in the 2d window->make detail - everything will go green), then just select the brushes you want to be structure, r/c in 2d->make structural.


When you advance a little and look at your map as a whole, you may decide to incorporate some buildings into a large portal that also extends into outside spaces. In that case it may only be 1 or 2 walls that need to be structural.

Remember, if it blocks a players view, its structure, everything else is detail.

This tutorial is from the cod tutorials but the concepts still apply. http://www.modsonline.com/Tutorials-read-135.html The tut explains what should be detail and WHY. It will also help you understand the theory of portals so that you can create usable/logical ones on your own. The tut can be hard to follow so read it several times.

I think I have a pretty good handle on portals and will work on a tut on what some of the options are for creating portals. The engine can be very tempermental with portals, but you would be surprised at some of what you can get away with. I also have some examples on ways to cut down the number of portal faces, there is a limit to the number you can have.
