When you texture you really neeed to stretch the water texture a long way, the exact amount depends on what effect you are going for. Press 'S' when your brush is selected to edit the texture.

If I may bump this thread, I am currently having the same problem. No matter how much I stretch my water, it looks really plain and boring and unrealistic. Only one or two of the many textures I have tried seem to have any movement, or even visible ripples, and my current solution is to decal armada stillwater over the canal water texture, which I really don't like doing.

What am I doing wrong? My first method was just a texture patch. This didn't add any sound or effects to players walking or exploding grenades in the water, so I scrapped that and I made a brush of water clip and textured the top the water. Both methods returned similarly poor results. (The pool is only 8 units deep).

Is there a specific texture you guys recommend? Maybe I missed it...

I'm searching for a nice water texture too, maybe with a moving effect.

Anyways for the grenade explosions you need to make a brush with the texture clip_water, then you get the water get water thats flies around when you drop a grenade in it. This brush must cover the water area.

For water sound and stuff when you walk through it, you need to use the texture clip_water_playerclip, you need to copy the bottem of your pool and put the above named texture on it, and place it exactly on your bottem otherwise it won't work.

Good luck!

Yep. Anything other than canal water looks really bad, and even canal water doesn't look good. Stretching doesn't seem to help.

You can get passable results easily enough - its the reflections i struggle with, cant get anything to look 'real'

can't remember what texture it was tho -sorry.

hmm, that water does look good. I am currently using the water from mp_cargoship, but it doesn't look that good tbh... Could you find out what texture your using there?

I think it was aftermath_water.

I had to stretch it a lot, and its applied to a patch in that first picture (If that makes a difference i don't know)

This is the sort of stretch you need. Hori stretch of 6-9 and a verticle stretch of around double (or vice versa)

Thanks, just out of curiousity why do you need to stretch the texture so much? If you stretch other texture you often get them weird looking and stuff.
