How do you chat in-game? General
Posted on Fri. Feb. 22, 2008

When I play games, I find them much more fun to play when chatting with other players. Some games have great in-game chatting software built right in. However, some don't or some could improve.

Right now, I primarily use Skype while in-game. However, Skype does use up some additional resources on my computer, it requires the host to invite people to chat but it's really clear sounding.

So, I am considering a different chat service to use and want to know what you like. Answer below with your favorite chat service and maybe post a comment.

How do you chat in-game?
TeamSpeak 54.41%
Ventrilo 28.19%
Skype 2.45%
In-game Service 4.9%
Google Chat 0.25%
MSN Chat 0.74%
Other Service 3.92%
None 5.15%

Skype.. but want more  Fri. Feb. 22, 2008
I use Skype, but the hosting/invite thing is a problem when in the game. Some games crash when you alt+tab out to the desktop. If you're hosting the conference then you have to do this to invite (or re-invite) someone. I'd prefer to use a teamspeak or ventrilo server. The problem is, I don't know which is better.

Is there something else out there that I should consider instead? Is TS vs Vent nothing more than a Chevy vs Ford argument (both good, choose one already. lol)?

I used to use Teamspeak. I had used it for about 3 years until the licencing company for Teamspeak introduced alot of new rules which meant a big majority of the cheap hosting services had to pay extra costs or risk being blacklisted.

The problem with Teamspeak is that the codecs used aren't all that great. They are acceptable, but nothing amazing. That's when I looked into other options. I wasn't a big fan of Vent but I found a great authorized host who charge hardly anything ($6 a month for a server running the high quality codecs) and the sound is pretty much just like Skype. Moved over to Ventrilo with friends and we love it.

Teamspeak is a bit better for text chat, but hey, that's what X-fire is for.

Yeah, the chevy sounds really bad... even when maxed out [ohwell]

Vent beats TS hands down for sound qualiity, but you need to pay them or have a "pro" server hosted somewhere, unless you need fewer than 8 slots.

You may want to check out Mumble
http://mumble.sourceforge.net/

It uses a tweaked Speex codec, and sounds pretty good.
Plus, there aren't any exploits or annoying join/quit scripts out there (yet)

Yeah i use skype with foyleman. Another problem is that if someone turns up late, while the others are playing then they can't join the voice chat cause nobody can add them in

Chat in-game  Wed. Mar. 12, 2008
Xfire is a great in-game chatting software. With xfire you can:
-See when your friends are online, what game they're playing, and what server they're on;
-Join in on their games with one click;
-See what the friends of your friends are playing;
-Unlike other IMs, you can send and receive messages from inside games without having to minimize (Alt+Tab) the game window. Your IMs appear right on screen: just hit Scroll Lock + X to respond. You can even take screenshots by pressing Scroll Lock + S and automatically upload them to your profile page;
-Xfire's voice chat lets you talk 1:1 or in groups with your friends while you're in or out of game. Superior voice quality and custom bandwidth settings ensure your gaming will still go on lag-free;
-You can download the latest mods, patches, and trailers for your favorite games to your desktop over our flexible and convenient P2P file network. Subscribe to Xfire's download channels and get game patches and files automatically delivered as soon as they're out- no more waiting around to get a patch, just play;
-Xfire shows off your gaming stats, such as the games you play and how many hours you've played them. They're on your profile and Miniprofile, which can be embedded anywhere on the web;
-Xfire supports many popular online PC games, including server and non-server based First Person Shooters, Real Time Strategy, and Role Playing Games. If you play it, we probably have it. And we're constantly adding newly suggested games.

used TS and Vent in the past but I tend to not use anything now these days, specially when going on public server. X-fire is way too intrusive I think the same way MSN is.

I used to use Teamspeak a few years back when I played COD1 :) Now I'm not as much as a clan person using teamspeak ect, The only game I play at the moment is Team Fortress 2 (Great fun) I just use the in-game voice chat

Battle Comm was the better of all of them then MS decided to buy it a trash it in lieu of their MS crap...

Personally, these days the less chatter I hear from l33t players that can only speak potty mouth the better. Get rid of it all in my opinion.

Cheers
