Would you pay for mod tools? General
Posted on Sun. Sep. 28, 2008

On episode 147 of Modsonair, Morphis raised an interesting question and we figured that we should let you all express your opinions.

"Would you pay for the use of mod tools?"

Regardless of the game or platform, would you consider paying to mod games (tools & support) - with the idea that the fees are being used by the game companies to provide support.

I am interested to hear how much you would be willing to pay and why as well.

Would you pay for mod tools?
I would pay a one time fee for mod tools for my favorite title 8.25%
I would pay a monthly/yearly subsrciption fee for mod tools for my favorite title 0.49%
I already paid for the game - Tools should come bundled because I am just fixing what the developers broke 68.45%
100% definitely NOT! 18.93%
I haven't seen a game yet that wasn't 100% perfect when the developers released it 2.43%
Games are the devil! 1.46%

I would be prepared to pay a small one time fee for mod tools

Depends, I quite like some free mod tools, but I wouldn't mind some tools that you could pay for if you had some premium stuff that wasn't included in a free one.

Such as:
In game example maps
Tutorials
Video Tutorials
Extra Assets
Extra Tools (Mod Managers, Compilers, Character Rigging) etc
Support Documentation and help
ETC

ACCESS DENIED!  Sun. Sep. 28, 2008
I feel the same as the Welshman. I'd pay the fee if it was for a game I was interested in modding, The problem is, it will come with an ass load of security and before you know it, you have installed the tools too many times and you can't use them. Ignoring anything illegal at this point (cracks etc).

You didn't think they would charge you for software that could be pirated did you?

the thing is..  Sun. Sep. 28, 2008
I wouldn't mind paying a one off fee (as long as it wasn't ridiculous) but only as long as i could first have about 14 days at least to have a play around to see if i'd actually even be able to do anything :P

So what i'm saying is if they were to make "demo" versions of the tools, then sure i'd pay when the time was up if i was convinced i could use it and wanted it..

Are Chocolate Coins Considered to be Currency?  Mon. Sep. 29, 2008
I would not pay any fees (unless they except choco coins)... if they release mod tools freely then they obviously want to encourage mapping and modding to expand the life of their game, if they sell the mod tools they are just looking for a quick easy buck.

I'm afraid if you pay for the mod tools
Developers of new mods will charge u for it.

I would pay an extra for a game bundled with the tools as long as they are supported (patch, fix, updates, you name it).

SDK only adds popularity to the game. Remember Half-Life ? Would it be so popular without its numerous mods ? Worthless saying - those mods grew up to "separate" commercial games ... "Separate" in quotes because you have to buy the "base" game to play the mod.

The developer itself is interested in making a game "moddable". And as for me, SDK (Mod tools or any other title for the same thing) is now a de facto standard in game developing. Does any develpoer allow himself to develop a game with old-generation graphics ? No, because the game would not be in demand. The same is with SDK: developer has to implement such "feature" in his game to stay on market.

The develpoer already gets non-obvious profits from SDKs.

i would pay a 1 time fee if they made a function in it that allows us to import cod/cod:uo cod models like we put cod4 models in our map.
Seeing that they wont do that, for w/e reasons it should come free so we can fix what they cba to fix with release.

As others have said, I wouldn't mind paying a small fee for the developers tools but, it would require accurate documentation, tech support forums, and actually work....

I like mapping and modding, but I would think twice if I would need to pay for the tools.

In fact, those guys that make mods and maps, with willpower and patience of steel, spend hours/days/weeks/months to make the game better / more varied, that way making the whole game live a longer life on market... the original developers or the publisher should be thankful like hell (even putting out payed competitions or something like the mapping contest on iw back there - those guys would deserve to be payed if they could make high-class mods/maps, or at least thanked)...

I don't think that doctors have to pay so they would be allowed to save the life of their patients or do an internal check... and so on.

Would I pay for tools that ruin my life  Mon. Oct. 20, 2008
to right, we would get a better product as the developers would spend more time on the tools, throw in the developer tutorials and a mass of there prefabs used in the new game
for lazy mappers [rolleyes]
and I'm sold.

If it worked like it's supposed to I would gladly pay for it. However, the support for it also sucks. All the tutorials I find are half done, explained in a manner that assumes you already know what you're doing, and don't offer anyhing specific to the needs of us beginners. Answers are mostly vague when someone replies and it's been mostly trial and error on my part to get my map to the point it is right now.

They Should Pay US  Wed. Nov. 12, 2008
Developers should be delighted to add the mod tools to their games. It is the mappers and modders that keeps their titles alive! Their games run much longer (and more sales are generated) due to new maps and mods being created by the public.

Just think how boring the game would be without new maps coming out all the time. The mappers and modders are probably responsible for 30 - 40 percent of sales. I know I wouldn't buy a game that didn't have a way to renew itself with new maps.
