Preview:
Like the original, Call of Duty 2 will see the
player taking on the roles of a soldier in the three Allied armies,
America, Britain and Russia, but this time around, you will be able to
jump between campaigns, rather than having to play one out before
getting the next one. The game starts in 1941 where you are a Russian
soldier in training. With this, you can then jump between the
campaigns. "Realistically, I think most people will play through the
entire Russian campaign before moving on to the British," says Infinity
Ward's Vince Zampella, "but if you get to a point where you're banging
your head against the wall, it lets you take a step back and try
something else."
American Campaign:
This is taking place on D-Day, but rather than the Paratrooper side
from Call of Duty, you will be assaulting from the sea, but not Omaha
Beach. The invasion force the player will be part of is at the infamous
“Pointe du Hoc”, a large coastal artillery battery three miles west of
Omaha Beach. There is a trailer showing some of this level and it looks
spectacular, if you haven’t seen this trailer, you really need to, to
get a sense of what this game has to offer. After the landings, the
game will presumably take the player inland, but unfortunately, I have
yet to find more information so if anyone knows any extra information,
I would be interested in reading it.
British Campaign:
This campaign throws you into the heat of the North African Campaign as
a British soldier. The first hints of this were thrown as us with the
first E3 releases earlier this year. The E3 showed us all the first
level, El Daba. Although in part of a squad, there are networks of
streets etc, so rather than like in Call of Duty, there was normally
one set way, with a few exceptions, this time; there will be multiple
paths you can take to get the missions completed.
Russian Campaign:
This campaign’s information is very limited. The only information I can
gather at this time, is that the game begins with the player training
as a Russian, and after this, the Russian campaign takes the player
through war-torn Russia as a Tank-Hunter. Other than that, the
information is not there. Not many other reviews are guessing where
this campaign will go, so this will really need to be waiting for the
games release and having a look yourselves.
Positives:
Well, for those who played Call of Duty and/or Call of Duty: United
Offensive, this really is a game to look forward to. If you didn’t,
this is basically a game, showing that G.I. Joe style fighting, taking
the enemy on alone, is only going to get you killed. It illustrates the
facts of knowing when to be hero and knowing when to watch your squad
mates blow the enemy to bits.
Features we can expect are the legendary ‘Shellshock’ experience. The
sound is distant, and the colours fade out slightly. Weapons in the
American campaigns we know and love are still included, M1 Garand,
Thompson, B.A.R and Springfield. The British are still carrying their
Lee Enfield Rifles. As nothing of the Russian campaign is released, I
can really only guess and hope the majority of weapons from this
campaign are left in.
Negatives:
“What about Multiplayer?” I hear you crying in proud and happy voices.
Well, Activision is keeping their cards very close to their chest about
Multiplayer at this time. No reports on possible maps, game-types, or
vehicle capabilities.
