Preview:
First announced on the 11th May last year, F.E.A.R is a game which I was looking forward to, then as less information was being released I phased this out assuming it was dead, so imagine my relief and excitement when the Single Player demo found its way onto my PC.
The game begins as an unidentified paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aero-space compound. The Government responses by sending in a Special Force unit to neutralise this threat. Communications with the Special Unit are lost due to an eerie signal which interrupts the radio communications. Moments after this signal starts, it ends, with evidence of the Special Forces team having literally torn apart. This is where you come in. Like many games, you are part of a team who are called in when the situation gets out of hand, and this game is no exception. You and the team need to go in and neutralise this unknown force at all costs.
Gameplay:
Going by how the demo was, the gameplay is superb. So far I haven’t heard anyone voicing bad comments about this game. The action is smooth, the environment is realistic and the action is intense. If you normally run around a corner with all guns blazing, like myself in most games, you may enjoy this game as the tension can reach such a high level you find yourself gingerly looking around the corner.
The designers have really gone to town with creating suspense and tension with the use of music. Out of combat, you can’t heard much, whether there is music or not, I am still unsure, but when you get to an area of suspense, the music makes its cue and you feel something will happen and you become edgy.
Positives:
The game’s graphics are visually superb. Some areas of the demo feels like a movie with the tense music. The story is relatively strong and you can try to be Rambo and G.I. Joe, but I wouldn’t see you lasting too long. If you want a game which is a FPS where you get a gun and blow the enemy away on your own, get Unreal. If you want a game which introduced tension and suspense, not just visual, but audio as well, then you really need this game.
Negatives:
The only real down-fall is that for those who played the demo. If like me, you have played the demo to death and can almost complete it blindfolded, there are rumours that this is solely a demo and will not feature in the full game. You will need to take elements with what you learnt from playing this demo and put it into your performance in the full version.
One other negative is that this game, no matter how good it looks, is a real space guzzler.
5.0 GB free Hard Drive Space for installation; Additional hard drive space for a swap file and saved game files
The 5 GB is just to install. You will need more space if you want to save your progress.
