My friend and I are have trouble logging into the same server from his house. We're both behind a linksys router on his static IP address.  Basically, he will find a server, then log onto it, then I will refresh my list, and the server he just joined wont show up on my list.  And vice-versa when I join first.  Or, He could join a game, and then I try to join, and I just get the "Awaiting Connection Message".

Any advice??

TIA

Add +set net_port 20101 to the second computer's SOF2 shortcut command line.

I had the same EXACT problem.  My wife and I are behind a LINKSYS BEFSR41 Version 2 Router and when i joined a SOF2 MP game on my MAIN system, she would do a search on her system (my secondary/backup system) and would not b able to find me.

once I added +set net_port 20101  to my secondary systems string it WORKED!!!! She did a search and there I was.  Now she can play in the same SOF2 MP games I am in.

THANKS for this INFO!!!

This is a known issue with Quake 3 engine games and NAT devices (such as hardware routers). If the server "sees" two connections from the same IP and port, it will either not allow the second connection, or it will boot the first connection.

By the way, DMZ would only help for inbound traffic, not outbound; it would not affect what an external server would "see" as far as the port address.

The Linksys BEFSR41 (in its early stages) even had problems with Quake 2 engine games (such as Half-Life). This was fixed in a firmware release. I remember sending the "fix" for Half-Life over two years ago to http://www.practicallynetworked.com (formerly timhiggins.com). Linksys even put the solution into their updated manuals, using more or less my exact wording from the site.

RamRod: Maybe you should pin this one.

Awesome, thanks for the help.  I'm running XP, so I couldn't seem to be able change the target info for the shortcut like you can for other Windows OS's. So what I did was make a batch file in the game directory that does this "sof2mp.exe +set net_port 20101", basically the same thing you suggested.

So if anyone is running XP and is having this problem, this is one possible workaround. :)

Umm... you should be able to change the target even in XP.  I have done so on many of my shortcuts and am running XP Pro.
