Over 20,000 individuals have signed up to a Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Group on Steam, Valve’s online games portal and community service.

The community campaign against Left 4 Dead 2, the recently announced sequel to Valve’s November 2008 survival-horror co-op title L4D, was formed on June 1.

According to the group, the hurried release of Left 4 Dead 2 as a standalone sequel will "split the communities and decrease the quality of multiplayer gaming… The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a standalone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead," it says.

"Left 4 Dead has not yet received the support and content which Valve has repeatedly stated will be delivered," the group continues. "Therefore, we - the members of this Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott - promise to abstain from the purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 until our requests are addressed."

The group asks that Valve continues to release L4D DLC and that the sequel be launched either as a discount expansion or as a free download.

Announced at E3 earlier this month for Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 is slated for release on November 17. It’s set to feature five new campaigns, dynamic weather effects, a new melee weapon system, zombie dismemberment, four new survivors, variant special infected, 20 plus weapons and a third multiplayer mode.

Valve's VP of marketing, Doug Lombardi, recently told Edge how the company’s developing some of the core features of L4D for the upcoming sequel.

Thanks for sharing. I agree with all except for getting L4D2 for free -- that obviously won't happen, but discount seems feasible.

The last update was in April and we're in June, how is that every week? Check facts please.

The guys have some very good and valid points imo. The number of members is now over 25,500 and growing daily. What they ar e doing, maybe without realizing it, is what I feel the COD PC Community should have done when we saw the "consolisation" of the COD Titles. This is what Valve seems to be aiming for and the guys know it will kill modding and alienate the community on PC in favor of yearly game releasing with poor Content and no SDK.

I wish them all the best and hopefully Valve will wake up and smell the coffee, nothing is sure with the prospect of cashing in big time with the Console market.

Blimey, it's so obvious that console market should be a primary target for game makers that it is a surprise we still have that many PC games released.

my 2 pennies.

I'm just happy I get to play a Video Game I actually like, let alone complain about it.

Some times people are strange in large numbers. They do things just because it seems like a good idea at the time. Drama is funny when you get to sit back and watch it develop.

If I'm not getting paid, losing money, or my job over L4D2 then it can have its sequel.

People need to understand that it's a business. 9 times out of 10 business's do things for a reason. There is nearly always a winner and a loser. If you like L4D, then the business needs to win. If you don't like it, then join the "Group" because it seems like a good idea right now eh? [duh]

Console is only going to get bigger and companies want the games going in the Direction of "Project Natal". Who wouldn't want their game on the biggest Game System this side of the nuthouse. Project Natal is going to be the base of every home soon, probably one day going to replace the PC, all interactive, tracking a persons movements in 3D and recognizes user voices and faces? Cmon, what does that sound like to you?
Definitely not a base for video games. It's a shell for something bigger. First coat of paint.

If I own a Video Game company, I want my game to be played on that Console, or whatever they are going to call the damn thing.

Welcome to the new Generation of Gamers. No more point and shoot [lol]

I could really care less about the Sequel. If you don't like the business and its actions then don't buy the game, let alone play it. That is truly a funny article.

Thanks for sharing though Zeroy. [thumbs_up]

Left 4 Dead 1 is a very unfinished but very fun game. Each campaign needed an intro movie (left 4 dead 2 has that) more weapons (l4d 2 has them), built in game modes (l4d 2 has them)... basically L4D was a beta game and now we're going to be getting the proper game (but from E3 videos it's still buggy as hell).

As for 'new content' through patches, well we have only received needed fixes... and a 'survival' mode which is about as useless as the hype for Alan Wake.

I still like Left 4 Dead as when you get a good group of friends on versus mode it's better than any other adversarial game at the moment.

So since I paid for a game that's been made obsolete in less than a year and we'll be paying for fixes/intro movies and built in game modes that should have been in the first game, half price would be acceptable. (also if the console players have to pay more for it that my cheer me up too [lol])
